Lenten
Slovak Hymn Sing
Sacred
Heart Church, Wilkes-Barre, Pa
The
compilation of Slovak hymnology dates from the 17th century. It is
vast and varied. While the selection of hymns may differ from parish to parish
certain hymns were consistently used. An example of this is found in the
devotion of the Stations
of the Cross (Krížová
Cesta). “Stála Matka ľutújca” is a translation of the Church’s traditional Latin hymn, “Stabat Mater”.
The Slovaks had their own hymn for the 14 Stations of the Cross, “Kresťania
Sem Pospiechajte”.
“O
Srdce Kamenné”
is set to the same hymn tune as “Pred
Tron Tvoj, O Kriste”,
the verses of which were sung for the ordinary of Lenten Masses.
Psalm 50 was chanted at Vespers and “Pod'akujme
Kristu Pánnu”
was the final hymn for Benediction during Lent.
